NOV, Fuglesangs and Nebb have developed an active subsea cooler concept. Nebb’s part of the project has been development and qualification of a complete control system and communication solution for the subsea pump, including a 45 kW subsea VSD.

The main components in the active cooler system are a heat exchanger, a pump and a control system. Nebb has developed and qualified the control system for operation at 3000 m depth.

The control system is fully redundant and qualified according to ISO 13628-6/API 17F.

The project has been a Joint Industry Project (JIP) with Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies as JIP leader, and with several oil companies as JIP partners.

The pump module is currently undergoing a 1-year subsea qualification test.

Project duration:  2012-2016.

Subsea Frequency Converter

A significant part of Nebb's delivery has been development and qualification of a 45 kW subsea Variable Speed Drive (VSD) with the following specifications:

  • Power: 45 kW
  • Voltage: 400 VAC
  • Depth: 3000 meters
  • Shock & vibration: ISO 13628-6/API 17F approved
  • Standardized Ethernet Communication (Fibre)
  • Designed for redundancy

This is as far as we know the first qualified subsea VSD in its class.
