Clean fossil fuel heat and power plants - General information

[ Introduction ] [ General information ] [ Nebb process solutions ] [ ZENG-Oxyfuel pilot plant ]

The oxyfuel technology is one of three main technology options for CO2 capture from fossil fuel fired power plants. Combustion takes place with pure oxygen and CO2 is extracted after combustion by flue gas cooling.

Oxyfuel is the only technology option that captures ~ 100 % of produced CO2. Another advantage with the oxyfuel technology is that nitrogen does not take part in the combustion process, and therefore no NOX are produced.

Based on the Carnot principle the thermal efficiency of a power process increases at a higher temperature level of heat supply. High thermal efficiency can be achieved by fuel supply to a gas turbine. An oxygen fired gas turbine is not mature technology and development is required to obtain an oxyfuel process with high thermal efficiency.

CO2 capture is a necessary indictment to reduce some of the greenhouse gas emissions. Oxyfuel is the only technology with both zero emissions of CO2 and NOX and has the potential of high thermal efficiency. An oxyfuel gas turbine development program is a necessary and essential initiative to obtain mature high efficient oxyfuel technology.
